Today I wanted to share how much Euro Truck Simulator 2 is fun. Essentially you drive a truck throughout Europe, building your business. I will not go into details as many others on the web have already done it. You can see the promotional trailer on YouTube. It is a great game for kids and adults. I encourage anyone to try it out. It is a very relaxing game; ideal to play when a bit tired. I do warn people though to purchase a wheel and pedals. Without them, the experience is totally different and the game looses its appeal.

Under Linux, there are no wheel and pedals officially supported for the platform. I blindly purchased a used Logitech Driving GT Wheel and it turns out that it works well. There is no force feedback (as for any game and joystick; this is a limitation of the Linux driver). All the buttons and axis work. However, oddly, when you try to configure a button, Euro Truck has a hard time to recognize it; be very patient and try, try again until it gets it. But once it recognizes the button, it will work flawlessly in the game. Odd bug to say the least.

Setup:

  • Ubuntu 14.04 LTS Trusty Thar
  • NVIDIA GeForce GTX 560
  • NVIDIA proprietary player
  • 1800x1200 screen.
  • Logitech Driving GT Wheel
  • Graphics settings set to medium. I tried high and it mostly works, but there is some sutter once in a while

Very seldom buggy.
